What’s a man to do? A Constant Thunder by Robert Krenzel is fit for all ages and follows Gideon and Ruth as they face the struggle of living through a war we could only imagine.
I must admit that I didn’t read Gideon Hawk books 1-3 before diving into this one. Why? Because this one I had in paperback and the pages were calling out to me begging me to read them! So I went ahead and read book 4 and I must say that it’s great to find a book that you can pick up at any time and get sucked right into the story without getting lost. There was never a moment where I was confused by not having read the previous books, but I’m still curious what all went down in books 1-3 so I’ll probably have to go back just to see.
Krenzel has an amazing grasp of what it would be like to live and serve during the Revolutionary war. His characters are authentic and engaging as they develop through this intriguing time. It’s difficult to imagine a world without email, cars, and constant communication, but this book eloquently puts this into perspective. Soldiers likely walked on foot for miles just to get into a battle.
Even though we probably can’t relate to living in Gideon’s time, there’s definitely relatable moments sprinkled throughout this book. We’ve all had those moments where there are things expected of us that challenge our sense of right and wrong, times where we’re pure pressured into doing something we wouldn’t normally do, and moments where we underestimate our opponents. These are just some of the experiences Gideon Hawke faces and if you enjoy reading Historical Fiction then this book should definitely be on your to be read list!
